If you find yourself in the unenviable position of being unemployed during this recession, you will need strong survival skills. Hugely important will be the ability to spend wisely and to save money where you can. While it’s not easy, there are some ways to save money when you’re unemployed.

* Eat at home more

First off, cut out your Starbucks visits. Make coffee at home instead. And start eating all, or at least most, of your meals in the comfort of your own home. You will save a lot of money this way, as eating out adds up quickly. When you do feel the urge to go out, go to a restaurant that offers affordable lunch specials. That will be cheaper than dining out at night.

* Spend less at the grocery store

You will need to come up with tactics for spending less at the grocery store. For starters, check the weekly deals for stores in your areas. Try to stock up on items you use when they are on sale. Some stores, such as Publix, offer great “Buy One, Get One Free” deals. Keep the lookout for these great deals.

Also, buy the store brand on items when possible. That will save you lots of money, as the store brand tends to be cheaper than the name brand.

* Review your monthly expenses to see where you can save

When you’re unemployed, you need to find ways to save wherever you can. Call your mobile and Internet provider. See if there are ways to cut back on your current plans or to bundle services for a better rate. Cut back on cable services, or stop the cable service in its entirety. Stop getting manicures and pedicures, or other types of frivolous spending.

It’s best to list out your monthly budget to find ways to save. When you get everything listed - as accurately and honestly as you can, make decisions on where to cut spending. You may not want to give up some things. But you have no choice until you’re gainfully employed again.

* Buy clothing at consignment stores

If you need some clothes during this time of unemployment, shop at some consignment stores. You may be surprised at some of the deals you can find. Check to see if there is a Junior League consignment store in your area. You can find lots of good brands at one of these stores.

These are just a few ways to save money when you’re unemployed. Make smart decisions throughout the day. It’s not fun to cut back drastically, but you will be glad that you did. And you will learn some valuable lessons along the way.
