Online video game reviews: Evony

Hi, I am an Evony Addict.

About two months ago I stumbled onto an ad for Evony.com. A Massive Multiplayer Online Game. The ad said the game was free to play and showed knights and castles and looked like it might be interesting to try. Now, I am hooked.

The concept of Evony is simple. Once you join you are given the plot to a small village. Your task is to develop this village into a large medieval city. Eventually, your goal is to conquer the world of Evony. The trick is all other players have the same goal.

You will accomplish these goals by building housing for the villagers, planting farms, and digging mines. As in any medieval city, you need to worry about defending yourself and your city while growing.

The designers of Evony have helped you out here with two great features.

First, once you start you are in “Beginner’s Protection” and can not be attacked for one week. This allows you to grow the basics and learn the game in security and helps balance out the game between older players and newer.

The second great feature is quests. In the beginning quests are both the way you learn about the game and the best way to grow and succeed. As you meet each quest, you are rewarded with more resources to help you on the way.

As the lord of your city, you set the tax rate; you decide where things will be built and what things to build. You will decide what enhancements you want to research to help you to grow. The initial levels take a minimum of resources and time. As the levels increase, the resources needed and time increase much as in real life.

Once you have built your city up, you will find your self moving into the second phase of the game. By now the building of your city is something you understand and you will be ready for this phase. For me, this is where my true addiction began. Now you will be interacting with other players.

As you move out from your city into the world of Evony, you will see other players and you may find yourself sending your troops into battle. Victory is sweet and to lose is painful. At some point you will be contacting other players in the game through the in game email system and either forming an alliance with them or joining an existing alliance.

Getting into an alliance that matches your style is a great thing. Each alliance has a chat window where they can “talk” to each other without the players not in your alliance seeing it. This gives you the ability to share information, develop strategy, coordinate attacks or defense and grow and work towards the goal of conquering the Evony World.

Working together as a team, you and your alliance work to control your area and expand into other areas. You find yourself interacting often with your online friends. You get a feel for people’s characters and determine how much you trust them and how much you rely on them to help you in good times and bad. As a player I have faced individual battle as well as massive multi-alliance wars. I have both fought and been someone who sits in a safe area and supports the fighters with both troops and the resources to fight. Both offer their own challenges and different types of troops to work with.

The strategy of all this as well as the interactions with other people is what has hooked me on Evony. By offering the excitement of attack and defense along with the need to use strategy, the makers of Evony have created an intriguing world that draws you in and captures your attention.
