Tips for writing love letters

by Tricia Psarreas Murray

Created on: January 05, 2010

When it comes to writing love letters, most of us feel like we need to be temporarily possessed by Cyrano de Bergerac to write something worth reading. The truth is, modern love letters do not have to sound like Shakespearean prose nor do they have to be written in the calligraphic styling of Lord Baron. Words do not have to be cut off with impromptu apostrophes and since ‘Hark’ is now only part of a Christmas song, it has no place in a love letter. With a few simple pointers, writing love letters does not have to be a tedious task from the past. On the contrary, writing love letters can be an expressive gesture of how you feel in the present that can be forever treasured in the future.

Make a List

Before you start forming your letter, make a list of some things you want to include. You may want to include specific occurrences like the first time you met or more general observations like what your lover looks like after a passionate kiss. Your list can be sloppy and out of order. Just try to include every specific detail you want to include in your love letter and the actual writing process will be a breeze.

Recognize Gender

Women and men have vastly different ideas of romance. If you tell a woman that you love caressing the soft curves of her body, she will be touched. If you say that to a man, he will only be touched in the sense of taking a sucker punch to his ego. Generally speaking, women like to read about mental characteristics and how she makes a man feel, whereas men prefer to be reminded of how much a woman needs him in her life. Whether you are writing to a woman or a man, it should be safe to write about facial features, memories, and general feelings of love.

Write as Yourself – Sort Of

When you start writing your letter, try to sound like yourself – to an extent. If you would normally praise your girlfriend by saying something like, “Girl, that booty looks tight,” you might want to look for a more endearing way to express yourself. In fact, you might want to stay away from the booty in your letter all together. Remember, you are the one writing this letter, but this letter is going to be around for a long, long time. You don’t have to hire somebody to make sure your grammar is perfect and that your letter could be published in the book of greats, but you also want to make sure it looks like you put time and effort into it. So while you don’t have to write like a medieval dead guy or an uptight nun,
