How to maintain a blog

by Gordon Hamilton

Created on: January 02, 2010

Considering how to maintain a blog requires that one take several factors in to account. Although blogging is by no means difficult and is in fact one of the easiest fashions in which to develop and maintain a strong Internet presence, if one is not aware of the mechanics of blogging and what can happen if the blog is not nurtured and fed in the right fashion, even the most successful of blogs can soon sink in to the murky depths of the blogosphere forever.

There is no question that the single most important factor of how to maintain a blog is to ensure that the blog is updated with fresh, quality, relevant material on an extremely regular basis. It is this factor which will most contribute to any blog becoming what is known as, “Sticky,” and without this regular supply of new material, the blog is likely to wither and die as a plant without water.

It is vital, however, that one note that the requirement of adding fresh material to any blog stipulates that the material be fresh and original. Google spiders hate duplicate content and simply copying text from another site which one owns - even though this would not make it plagiaristic - is likely to be seen as being as much of a negative as posting nothing at all. In a similar sense, the material must be extremely relevant to the subject nature of the blog and include a liberal supply of key words and phrases attributed to the topic.

The other reason why fresh content is so important when looking at how to maintain a blog is that a blog depends on attracting a regular following in order to know its greatest level of success. Where new material is either not added, or irrelevant or sub-standard material is added, this significantly decreases the chances of anyone wishing to subscribe to the blog and follow the posts on a regular basis.

A blog is not of course simply a long list of posts made about a particular subject. Although maintaining a blog in this fashion is possible, it is far more desirable for one to include both relevant links to other sites upon the particular subject and products for sale or subscription services which readers can sign up to. The links provide valuable service for the visitors to the blog and are viewed favourably by Google for this reason and the products and subscription services allow visitors to perhaps purchase items related to their subject of interest in a convenient and hopefully cost effective fashion.

How to maintain a blog is therefore a commitment on an ongoing basis and the blog will only bear the desired fruit for as long as the blogger adheres to the above requirements.
