Steroids in baseball has been the blazing hot topic for the past few years now in sports. It's so big that even the US government has gotten involved on some level, even threatening to take the matter into their own hands if things aren't cleared up here soon. There are rumors about who did and who didn't but nothing substantial has come out on but a few players, most whom aren't even notable players.
My whole problem with the steroid issue is that all the high and mightys think they know what's going on and that they know how to fix it. Who has taken steroids? Who hasn't taken steroids? The truth is, I don't know. Do you? I'm smart enough to look around the league and have a good idea of people I think have been involved. I mean, Barry Bonds is an obvious one. Mark McGwire all but put it on display for the national media in his lockerroom. Ivan Rodriguez has extended a catching career that you thought would've taken a tailspin much earlier. Sure, we all can assume that these guys are involved but until we have prove, there's no way we can be the judge, jury, and executioners.
It is really a sad case when all these sports reporters that are voters for the Hall of Fame get on their high horses and declare a man unworthy to join the Hall of Fame with no evidence to support their claims. What, you're going to leave McGwire out because of what he said(or didn't say) in front of congress? That's ludicrous. If you want to say his numbers don't stack up, that's fine, and another debate to itself. Don't tell me though that we can assume someone did something and leave them out for that reason. If that's the case, then I want to see them leave Barry Bonds out, Albert Pujols, Alex Rodriguez, and every other player that's put up huge numbers over the years. People, we can't judge based off assumption, we just can't. It's not what our society was built on. People are innocent until proven guilty. And let this be known, I think Barry Bonds took steroids, I think Mark McGwire took steroids. There's some others I think took steroids, but I have no proof and therefor I can't vilify these men, I just can't.
So hopefully the Hall of Fame gets it together and puts these men in. If they insist on leaving McGwire out however, who had the misfortune to be the first one eligible from the steroid era, then they should leave every player out from this era. Until there's proof, don't judge, it's that simple. We can't be moralists until we check our own closets.
