Tips for making New Year's resolutions you can actually keep

by Sherry Denecker

Created on: December 31, 2009

I have lived a long time and had the pleasure of celebrating many a New Year’s Eve. As most people, I have given much thought to all the many things I could do to improve myself and the world around me in the New Year. I have vowed to quit smoking, eat better, drink more water and help my fellow man. I have been determined to organize my home and my finances and get my rambunctious children under control. While I am an honest person with good intentions, it seems every year I feel short of my great expectations. Most people do.

I think we make those resolutions in the spirit of the moment without giving real thought to the actual work required to fulfill them. In the end, our resolutions are cast aside and never realized. This year, don’t fall into that trap. This year resolve to do things you can actually do in the New Year. Set yourself up for success and not failure. As I raise my glass to toast the coming of the New Year I will vow the following”

This year I vow to be myself, without worrying about being judged by others. I am who I am and I will be that.

I vow to treat my family and friends like the jewels they are. Everything we have in this world is just on loan to us. I will appreciate them as if they could be gone tomorrow.

I vow to play more. It is through playtime that we are able to see the world through the eyes of a child and regain the magic that we adults have forgotten.

I vow to try my best at everything I do and be satisfied no matter what the outcome. As long as I can say “I tried”, I have succeeded.

I vow to get more rest. When you get enough sleep you benefit both physically and mentally and you tend to have a better attitude.

I vow to have fun and always look for the humor in life. A smile can change an outlook and a day so spread the smiles around.

I vow to be my own best friend and spend time with myself each week. When you learn to love yourself others will love you as well.

I vow to help where I can and never be too proud to accept help when I need it. Life is in fact a give and take endeavor.

I vow to follow my dreams no matter who thinks they’re crazy. Those who walk to the beat of a different drum tend to accomplish the impossible.

In essence, this year I plan on being a helpful, funny, well-rested, playful, loving person who is not afraid to follow my dreams and be myself. I think I can handle that.
