New years eve is quickly approaching and with it most of the population is preparing lists of new years resolutions. The most common things on these lists are goals that, if achieved, could drastically change their lives. This sounds so positive but when you look at the statistics it can be a bit of a downer. A recent study shows that 45% of americans regularly set some sort of resolution while only 8% actually succeed in achieving their goal. We really have to look at why this is and what can be done to improve these stats.
Let's start with why you want to make these changes. More than likely you want to change because you are unhappy with how your current situations are. Do you want to lose weight? Maybe get out of debt? Stop smoking? Whatever it is write it down and seriously contemplate why you want to change them, the more unhappy with them you are, the more likely you are to be motivated to change them.
Next, what part of your life do you hope to improve if you achieve these goals? If you want to shed some lbs maybe its that you'll be able to do more, look better in clothes, or just be healthier. Getting out of debt is certainly a good thing when you consider all the money you'll be saving on monthly payments and interest from credit cards and loans. Stopping a bad habit like smoking will make you healthier, save money, and may even get you a break on things like insurance. This is going to help you focus on the positive and how much better your life will be once you've achieved these goals.
Set a plan! Get a gym membership, set up an appointment with a credit counselor, or join a support group to surround yourself with others who have the same goals in mind. Getting friends and family involved can also help give you a boost as they can be your own personal cheerleaders and help keep you on track.
Avoid the behaviors that will lead to failure. Don't take the way to work that's got 10 different fast food restaurants. Avoid the shopping malls when you need something to do. Take a walk on your break instead of going out with the other smokers.
Finally stay positive! There may be bumps along the way but staying positive will help you achieve your goals and make your life better now!
