Poetry definitely matters in the twenty-first century. Over the years, it is not the concept of poetry that has changed, rather, it is the way in which people regard and appreciate poetry. In the past, poetry used to exist as a passionate mechanism with which to convey sentiments and emotions. However, during the twenty-first century, with the continuous progression of technology and the distractions of society, the appreciation for poetry has become lost. Very rarely is it possible to find the beauty in the written word. Nevertheless, even though poetry may not always be respected in the way that it should, it is still important to the progression of the twenty-first century.

So many wonderful poems are present. Both the poems of the past, and those written by contemporary authors possess vital messages to emotional comprehension and development. By analyzing poems from different time periods, it is possible to analyze the difference in structure and the use of literary techniques. For example, many of the poems written before the twenty-first century have definite structures, whereas the poems of the twenty-first century are typically characterized by free verse. If poetry did not matter in the twenty-first century, then such differences in structure would not be prominent, for no poems would have been written at all.

Therefore, poetry does matter in the twenty-first century. It may not represent the preferred literary form for some, although there are people that truly appreciate it. Those individuals that appreciate poetry need to reveal their knowledge, and demonstrate to others how vital it truly is. One of the ways of realizing that poetry matters in the twenty-first century is not to forsake it.
