Earning money on the web as a writer

by Gordon Hamilton

Created on: December 30, 2009

Earning money on the Web as a writer is a fairly straightforward procedure. It is determining how to earn a significant amount of money on the Web as a writer that requires considerable thought, investigation and experimentation.

Earning money on the Web as a writer in the first instance or in the short term will involve finding a site which is going to afford upfront payments, simply for the production of the writing material. There are a number of sites which offer this type of financial recompense to writers - naturally dependant upon the production of quality material - such as Associated Content and, for writers established upon the site, Helium. Earning money on the Web as a writer on sites such as these can also afford the additional benefit of ongoing royalties being paid on a permanent basis, based on such as the number of page views the writing receives or the Google Adsense revenue which it generates.

Earning significant money on the Web as a writer in the longer term is clearly a much greater undertaking. In addition to producing writing material for sites of the type specified above, one should be looking to start at least one blog on a very specific subject about which one knows a great deal. The blog hosting platform selected should be one which facilitates the inclusion of Google Adsense and allows bloggers to sell affiliate products from companies such as Amazon which are closely related to the topic of interest.

Web 2.0 hosting sites such as Squidoo and Hub Pages also permit one to earn money on the Web as a writer by providing facilities for miniature websites to be built on the writer’s chosen subject. Payment methods in this respect are similar to blogs but each site has its own specific procedures and terms and conditions, which should always be studied in full, not only to ensure that the maximum earnings are achieved but to ensure that no breach of same is inadvertently made.

One of the most important aspects of earning money on the Web as a writer is to ensure that all one’s material is properly optimised for the Web search engines and other traffic generators. This involves the careful use of keywords in the textual body of the writing, linking one’s different Web presences together as often as is possible and promoting one’s writing on such as social book-marking sites and social networking sites.

There is no doubt that earning money on the Web as a writer can be a very lucrative business but it is only likely to prove to be so with talent, hard work, patience and a little bit of luck thrown in to the equation.
