For those who suffer pet allergies it is important to realize that it is not the hair, or fur, that causes the allergy. The true culprit is the pet dander. When searching for a specific dog breed the allergy sufferer should ask how often the coat is shed and the grooming requirements. There are low shedding breeds, however, there is no such thing as no shedding.
I am owned by Pomeranians, and as one of the unfortunate allergy sufferers, found that I do very well with this breed. It is essential to have scheduled grooming to remove any loose fur and decrease dander. As a double -coat breed the undercoat should be brushed thoroughly, as well as the longer outer coat at least twice per week. The female Pomeranian will generally shed her coat twice a year if not spayed. This occurs after each heat cycle which are six months apart. The male Pomeranian will generally only shed his coat once a year. Please keep in mind that there may be other factors which will cause shedding such as temperature or stress. Grooming can be a very enjoyable time for you and your Pom. The Pomeranian's coat must never be shaved. The double-coat provides insulation in both hot and cold weather and allows the Pom to regulate body temperature.
Another popular choice for allergy sufferers is the Yorkshire Terrier. This breed does not have fur. Their coat is more consistent with human hair. It is extremely important to brush the Yorkie every single day as their coat is prone to tangles. If daily brushing is not something you're interested in it is a good idea to keep your Yorkie in a "puppy" cut. It is tempting to see a Yorkie all primped and pretty in the show ring and rush right out for bows and barrettes. However, it takes a lot of time and work to keep their coat beautiful and free of breakage. Many allergy sufferers find the Yorkie an excellent companion that does not adversely affect them. However, please be sure you're ready for the Terrier temperament!
Before making any pet a part of your family it is important to be absolutely certain that your allergies will not be affected. Do your research and ask as many questions as possible. If permissible spend some time around potential new furry family members. Having a pet can be rewarding and wonderful provided that the health and well-being of both human and pet are taken into consideration.
