Short stories: Demons

I raced breathlessly across the parking lot, cussing that I hadn't thought far enough ahead to have my car keys out and ready. I felt like the stupid girl in a bad horror movie, the one who awkwardly fumbles for her keys, only to drop them and then be attacked by her pursuer. Even in the mist of this infinite danger, I found humor in my thoughts, and smiled, although it may have been a bit of a crazed smile. Complete terror can sometimes cause the opposite effect that you would expect, kind of like how a tired child can become hyper. After a few seconds I located the correct key and threw open the car door, jumping in and slamming it shut just as quick. Less than a second later one of the nasty winged demons smacked right into my window. Fumbling again, but only for about a second, I managed to get the key in the ignition, start the engine, and peel out with a screech of the tires and a puff of smoke in the air. The demon that had just hit my car didn't need long to recover, and was soon right back at my window, sneering and drooling as it flew nearly effortlessly kept up with my car.

I glanced at my gas gauge, which appeared to be much more close to the "E" than I would prefer.  My mind drifted back to the last two hours, thinking of how I had gotten to this point. At 11:45 pm, when I walked into my office, I had been living a normal life, or at least what I consider to be normal, which may not seem so to some. By 12:15 I was in the middle of hell on earth. I had just held a séance, at which my services had been requested to contact a dead loved one for a grieving young girl. Her name was Adin, and she  had seemed completely bewildered, staring at me out of huge, scared blue eyes. How sad, I had thought to myself, she cannot be more than 17 years old, and here she was, not a friend in the world, living on the streets and surviving any way she could. Nothing was off limits. Her only goal was survival. The only person in the world she cared about gone.

Her boyfriend, Erich, the reason for the séance, had been brutally murdered just days ago, leaving her all alone and unsure of her whole life. At the time, I hadn't known that Erich was a horribly abusive young man that used her to
