Government intervention under cover of environmental protection is actually the root cause (along with union thuggery, but that's another topic) of the decline of the U.S. automakers.
In an effort to force products upon the consuming public that are both unwanted and unnecessary, Obama and his posse in the United States Congress are doing their part to destroy an industry that in years past was the envy of the world.
This unfortunate turn of events didn't start with Obama but he's enthusiastically hammering the last nails home. Simply put, by forcing private industry to produce, market, and sell products that a small minority of the population have a desire for, to arrogantly attempt to protect an ever-changing environment that we have very little control over, this administration is costing American citizens their jobs and helping to enlarge the dependent class in America.
Recent developments on the global climate-change front have brought in to question much of the science the state-controlled media has used in their effort to convince the western world we are responsible for some future weather Armageddon. From a whistle-blower at East Anglia U., to the fiasco in Copenhagen, to Mr. Gore's outlandish and easily refutable statements, the “science” is far from settled.
And the fact is, Americans like all things super-sized. Forget what may or may not be “good for us”, we like big meals and even bigger cars. The buying public has long since had a fascination with style and size, and the domestic manufacturers profit from feeding it. From the Road Runners and GTO's of the 60's to the Hummers of the 90's and 2000's, Americans have always loved big gas-guzzlers with pizazz. And all the fancy marketing campaigns urged by Uncle Sam will not change this fact.
The sad reality of this segment of our socialist march is this. As domestic automakers are forced to sell their divisions that produce these vehicles to overseas firms (Hummer is now a Chinese concern), the American job market suffers. The Chinese, and other countries, will produce them cheap enough that even with protective tariffs applied, we will be able to purchase them, further enriching foreign treasuries while costing American jobs.
President Obama will certainly attempt to force this issue. His candidacy was beholden to Big Environment and Big Union. He has no choice in the matter. For the sake of our economic future, lets all hope he doesn't succeed.
