Falling in love with your best friend: How to handle it

by Bob Eats

It can be hard to fall in love with your best friend because you don't know if you should admit it or not. To involve love in a friendship could bring you two together, but if you are rejected it can involve unnecessary tension.  And then there is always the horrible fear of rejection that puts sharp pains in the hearts of many.  Here is what you should remember if you fall in love with your best friend.

First, you need to decide whether or not you should tell them.  To do this, you need to take their actions into consideration.  Perhaps they feel the same about you, but if you know that telling them could only make things worse, it might be better to avoid it.  Use your intuition.

If you think that it is the right thing to do, you should tell them about your feelings.  But wait until you think it is the right time.    If you rush it then you might have an awkward time saying what you want to say.  Go over what you want to say in your head, but don't over analyze things or you might mess it up.  Think of a creative way to tell them and make sure and be sincere.

But what to do if they reject you?  Well, if this happens, be friendly anyways.  There is nothing worse than having your best friend removed from your life, and it can be heart wrenching.  Maybe give him or her a few days, and then talk to them like normal again.

On the other hand, if you decide that it is better not to tell them, try and train yourself not to think of them in that way.  It could remove some of the tension from your situation if they way you though of each other was the same.  Try taking interest in other people or purposely noticing bad things about them to make you fall out of love.  Or, if all else fails, just speak to yourself and tell yourself that it is good to have this person as a friend but a relationship will not work.  Then you should move on.

Love between friends can be very rewarding, so you should definitely consider telling them.  But at the same time there are negative things that telling them could result in, so weigh your options with care and caution.  Best of luck.
