The secrets of staying in love

by Hilda Gray

Created on: December 28, 2009

Emotions are temporary, and as their potency fades, so does our willingness to act on their behalf.  The delightful feelings experienced in the beginning years of a romance become routine, and we put aside the value of deep love.  This fading feeling can be sad in it's later stages, but it is never too late to take action against a slipping relationship.  Here are a few secrets of staying in love.

-Maintain a positive attitude:  Let the little things slide.  Remember how unimportant minor annoyances are, and how devastating they can be on your emotional health if you let them get to you.  Focus on what is good; life is too short to experience only it's negatives.  A good way to do this is to put things in perspective.  Think about the consequences of your attitudes and actions instead of letting minor discomfort rule your life.

-Actively contribute to your relationship:  You need to make a healthy relationship your top priority.  Everything you say or do has an impact.  If you make a constant effort to make your partner feel appreciated, this effort will be rewarded in the quality an depth of the relationship you share.

-Always try new things:  Nothing ruins the feeling of love like blandness does.  Going through the actions isn't enough to make your relationship as good as it could potentially be.  If things are no longer exiting, then a lot of the quality of love is missing.  So instead, surprise your sweetheart.  Try something new, every day.

-Put your partner's need before your own:  In the end, selfishness ruins relationships.  Often the reason why people are unhappy is because they put themselves first.  If you put others first and focus on the way they are feeling, your discomforts can be override.  Also, if you treat your partner as best as you can, they are likely to reciprocate.  It starts with you.

-Don't blame your partner:  If you blame others, it prevents you from examining your own character.  There is always something you can do.  If there is little romance left in your relationship, blaming your partner will only make the problem worse.  Everybody has faults, and it is easiest and most convenient on working to change your own instead of those of others.
