Women love romance, and writing a love poem is a great way to invite this excitement back into your marriage.  Not only would thoughtful act make your wife feel appreciated, but it provides opportunity for creative expression.  It may be hard to get started, but you do not need to be a professional writer in order to compose a meaningful piece of poetry that is likely to be treasured forever.

♥ Start by writing down a few feelings from your heart.  Figure out what you love about her the most, and why you want to be with her forever.  Including fond memories will help to make your poem seem more personal, so keep this in mind when writing.  If you're having a tough time getting started, rid yourself of your inhibitions and summarize how you felt when you met, how you felt the first time you knew you were in love, and how you feel about being together now.  Do this in five minutes.  No more, or you may over analyze your creativity and tire your inspiration.

♥ Take what you have written and change the wording.  Even though you are not yet putting the poem to verse, make your wording as poetic as possible.  Feel free to experiment, as you can always change it later on when rhythm becomes a concern.  If you are stuck on how to make your writing more potent, remember these three things: Replace weak verbs, use proper nouns instead of pronouns, and create metaphors.  For help creating metaphors, practice linking dictionary words together or draw inspiration for examples in lyrics or in the poetry of others.

♥ Now take these thoughts and do your best to translate them into verse.  It does not have to sound good at this point.  When writing verse, keep in mind that it helps to accentuate rhythm, make use of pentameter, and use repetitive sounds.

♥ Go over your poem and smooth the edges.  Make sure that everything flows nicely and state genuine feelings.  Also, remember that poetry is like art.  The shape that your poem comes in influences the way that it is read.  So, instead of having the poem in a paragraph, separate the lines as tastefully as you can.

♥ Give your poem at least three days before reviewing it.  Write a few more to experiment if you so choose.  After three days, you will be able to think much more clearly about your creation and therefore will be able to create a better final product.

♥ Think about the presentation of the poem.  You could write it in a card, or make a craft or decoration with which to write it in.  A well presented poem that obviously has taken effort will seem more valuable to your sweetheart.
