Being effective with a computer is as easy as spending a little time with one. Whatever the software, and whatever the application, you must have the desire and ability to sit and figure things out. This is the number one skill required by anyone. What's more important than what you know is how eager and flexible you are towards learning and working through challenges.

Of course, some jobs may require you to be good with a keyboard, but as print recognition software becomes more advanced, even typing will become overrated. That does not mean that you shouldn't learn to type "right now!", even if you are not looking for an office job. Being able to communicate effectively through typing is invaluable and that communication can only develop if you’re not having thoughts like "Where's that 'R' at?" interrupt you. If you are not interested in being more effective with your communications, then getting a job in an office may be the opposite of what you need. Some businesses rely on the ability if it's employees to be clear and rapid with it's communications, and until words appear on the screen when you think them, typing will always be the most effective way to that. You can pick up typing tutor software from any department store these days, or even download one from the Internet. With a little patience and determination, you can be typing in days.

Microsoft Office has become the backbone of the administrative processes in a number of companies around the world. Its components are easy to learn and their utility for getting things done is apparent immediately. What's important about knowing how to use the software is what you are using it for. If you have a basic knowledge of word processors and spreadsheets you should have no problem getting on the ball immediately.

If you are not familiar with the format of communications and record keeping in the company, you may become unorganized very quickly; yet, with Microsoft Office's ability to provide templates, for just about everything, you may not even be required to be familiar with any types of company format. Templates are provided for many types of business letters and memos. Excel provides pre-made spreadsheets that can be used with minor modifications.

Even if you do not know anything about computers, a little time spent learning how to type, and researching the specifics of the job to which you are applying, should yield you the qualifications to be hired on anywhere there is an office. By becoming good at asking the right questions to any search engine, you can bring any information you need to the screen right in front of you. Any equipment you need to know how to operate, or any document you need to know how to write, can be explained be getting intimate with Google about your needs. The world is your playground.
