Poetry: Death

by Courtney Shay

Let's Remember Daddy

Let's flower him in sleep
With petals of white
Blossoming goodbyes

Smile at photographs
Older yellowed pictures
Of bellbottoms and wedding cake

Let's load the old movie reel
Confirm those hazy gray memories
Remind us of what we try to forget

Tell stories of his life
Recall his golden days
Sigh with an inherited nostalgia

Let's listen to his captured voice
Embrace the gentle bass blues
Harness a love for something in our genes

Emulate his genius
Finger the silver musical strings
Don't forget what he told us

Let's picnic in the graveyard
Dance among the green mossed tombs
Kiss the engraved name

Let's tear out our shattered hearts.
