Excerpt from Subtle Strings

Luc put out his fifth cigarette, he wanted to pull his hair out reading all of these demonology books. He rubbed his eyes pushing his shoulder length blond hair out of his face. "Damn it, Jasper what’s taking you so long..." He got up and padded over to the fridge grabbing a can of soda. Opening the cold can he sighed before taking a gulp. He heard a nock on the door down stairs, he placed the can down quickly and scrambled, skidding down two steps before catching back up with himself before scrambling to the door. "Hello?!"

"Oh...Mr. Peridot, did I catch you at a bad time?" Lilith Dagrun said, as she side stepped Luc with her white purse in hand. "I would hate for that."

"No, no," he said scratching his head. "Just doing research that’s all."

"Research on who would want my mother’s necklace?" she asked. Her brown eyes had a sparkle that they lacked the last time she was at the agency.

Luc nodded, "But wasn’t it your Grandmother’s?" he asked, stifling a yawn.

"Hmn?" she asked, looking over at a book case. "That’s what I said." She took out a volume. She started to flip through the book, not looking at him. "How long have you been partners with Jasper?"

"Oh, uh, five years," Luc answered, going to take out a cigarette before stopping, making an effort to keep his partner from complaining about smoking in-front of clients later.

"I wanted to know a little bit more about you two," she answered, smiling putting the book back and going around the vanilla painted room. "For example, did he go on to college?"

"Uh no, neither of us did, though he did self teach a lot of stuff. I think most of it was languages and things of obscure nature though." Luc watched as she flitted around the room looking all over.

"Why do you have tiny crosses and pentagrams carved around the room?" she asked glancing at him.

"Uh, so we keep out some unwanted entities," Luc answered, thinking Jasper must have added them after their encounter with the demon who if given any more of a chance would have taken Luc’s life.

"I see," she said moving on, "what if the danger was invited in? What would happen then?"

"I...I don’t know, I guess they wouldn't do anything." Luc answered getting a little suspicious of the woman now. Why would she ask something like that?

"I have another question, if you wouldn’t mind Mr. Peridot. Jasper Nocturne has a ancient power coursing through his veins does he not?"
