What is poverty?

When a person or group of people is disadvantaged, and in need of the fundamental elements required to maintain a minimum standard to preserve their well-being and lives, the circumstance of the people is referred to as poverty. Because of the wide variety of cultures and the gapping differences between Western civilizations and other civilizations across the world, the definition of poverty is culturally relative. However, the basic fundamental resources required to maintain life are essentially defines as food, safe drinking water, and shelter. Although, in the United States, many people defined as living under the poverty line also have access (although sometimes very limited) to information, education, health care, social status, and the ability to achieve political power or, at the very least, an opportunity to develop themselves and advance in society. Although this opportunity is arguably slim in many, if not most, impoverished regions of the United States, the statement remains true as there are many countries across the globe that do not offer this opportunity in their definition of those individuals living in poverty in their country.
