Synastric Astrology is the study of relationships as they apply to the positions of the stars and planets of two individual charts. For instance, if you take the Natal charts (chart made at the time of birth) of two people and see how they combine with each other, you are implementing Synastric Astrology. This is a common practice among astrologers to see how they are compatible (or on a lesser note, incompatible) with each other.
There are many different ways to apply synastry charts to your partnerships. The most popular way is simply to look at the comparison of your planets vs. their own planets. So if you have a Sun in Aquarius and they have a Sun in Sagittarius, you are comparing your sun signs. You can apply this same principle to other planets, such as their moon, Mars, Venus, and others. This is how you can see how the planets get along with each other. It's important to know about aspects as well, but that's for another article. An example, in the Sagittarius with Aquarius sun signs, would be a partnership full of independence, trust, and experimentation.
The other popular way, rather than comparing signs, is looking at the combination of aspects in your charts. This is more commonly referred to as a "Composite Chart". To do a composite, you would need to take the degrees of each sign, and find where they meet. So, if you had a sun in Aquarius 25 degrees, and Sun in Sagittarius 21 degrees, you would meet halfway at Sun in Capricorn 23 degrees. Although, this means your relationship will act like a sun in Capricorn, which almost guarantees a penchant for getting things done, it's also important to look at the aspects of the composite chart. So, you combine two planets(your sun and partners sun, and let's say your moon and their moon), and you get a Sun in Capricorn and a moon in Virgo, together the aspect of your combined sun and moon signs would be trined. This would indicate that the two partners allow each other the freedom to be themselves in the relationship and also a usual lack of conflict and tension.
These are the two most used Synastry examples. There are plenty more that can be done, for example, the composite chart example I used is known as the Midpoint Method (finding where the planets meet halfway, and drawing from that aspect). Others include, Composite Reference methods, multi-composite reference method, and midpoint method to name a few. It's up to you to decide which kind of Synastry chart you wish to use, and remember that you can use it both for relationships of the social and intimate kind.
