How serious is global warming?

by Gary Betts

Global warming is here and has been a fact of life since 1976. But, contrary to alarmists in the mainstream media and government, I believe it is not all that serious. I also believe that it is a natural process and is not man-made. Global warming has happened before and is as natural as ice ages.

Some scientists, who have been spreading exaggerated rumors of impending doom, arrogantly believe that mankind is so powerful that it can even alter the unimaginable powers of nature. Compared to the mighty forces of nature, mankind is insignificant.

Global warming has happened naturally several times over the last several millions of years. For example: from 110,000 to 130,000 years ago and peaking about 125,000 years ago, Earth had temperatures much greater than those of today. Forests in North America, Europe and Asia reached well above the Arctic Circle.

The sea levels were 15 to 20 feet higher that today from the melted ice caps. But there was no catastrophe. There was no mass extinction. The Earth is still here despite those extremely high temperatures.

An article published on the website of Ecoworld, a group of environmentalists trying to make our world a better place, says that the global-mean-annual-surface temperature had risen rapidly from 1976 to 1986 and then leveled off. Since 1995, the temperature has remained essentially flat. The Earth's global-mean temperature varies with location.

Plus the oceans, which cover 70% of the Earth's surface, are moving in and out of equilibrium with the surface for a variety of reasons such as El Nino which has destroyed civilizations over the centuries.

Richard Lindzen, a well-respected atmospheric scientist and professor of atmospheric science at the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), said in an interview on CNN in December 2009, that the Copenhagen Climate Conference was a waste of time that only served to cause hysteria.

In an article published on the website of Ecoworld. Richard Lindzen wrote that the regulation of carbon emissions would be the biggest power grab by big business and government in the history of the world. Since 60% of the original forest canopy on Earth has been lost, why not just simply reforest the planet to absorb more CO2?

Richard Lindzen also wrote an article in The Wall Street Journal. He wrote that there are three claims that have widespread scientific support. (1) Global temperatures have risen by about one degree in the last
