Last night February 16, 2007 a friend of the family took my daughter and I to a movie in Murrieta, Ca. We watched Music and Lyrics with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. It is a comedy and we had fun watching the movie and eating pop corn. When we came out of the theater and exited on the street we encountered a long line of cars due to a roadblock by the police and the sheriff's department. We were stopped and the driver, our friend, did not have his driver's license, nor registration, nor insurance card with him. They questioned him then the officer wrote something on a stick on and put it on the glass in front of the driver's side, and told my friend to take a right and go to a lot where there were a lot of police personnel waiting for the drivers.
There was a large vehicle which had computers in it and assorted machines and fingerprinting equipment. Another vehicle looked like a paddy wagon, all very imposing and official. A police officer showed us where to park as there were more than 25 vehicles parked with some drivers in them. All drivers that had been drinking were provided with the breathalyzer, none were made to walk a straight line. There were automobiles, pickups, trucks, and vans being pulled over by the police. It did not appear to be a common drunk driving roadblock.
Our friend was lucky they citied him and did not tow the car nor put him in jail as is normally done in California during the road blocks. He was citied for driving without a license, no registration, and no insurance. He will have to go to court and pay a very large fine or do community work. He probably will be required to go to driver's school. Nevertheless, the officers were very polite throughout the ordeal. I was concerned the automobile would be impounded; our friend hauled of to jail, and us having to take a taxi home.
There is a lesson to be learned from this experience and that is when in California be prepared for the roadblocks by the local police and the Immigration Department.
