The pentagram: Evil or holy?

Is the pentagram evil or holy?

Generally, I have found the pentagram to be more a holy symbol if anything.  It can be used for evil, but what it really represents is not evil and should not be used in such an insulting way.

The five points of the pentagram stand for the elements of Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Spirit, with Spirit being the top most point of the star.  Also, the five points stand for To Know, To Dare, To Will, To Be Silent, and To Go, which are five very important points of wicca.  To Know means to know what you do and to know things beyond the human realm.  To Dare is to dare knowing these things and to dare the use of magic.  To Will is to use your will.  To Be Silent is to be silent on the workings you do, for boasting about those workings is frowned upon.  To Go means to go your way and to do what you will.

Not only does the pentagram stand for these things but it is also a powerful tool in calling on things greater than one's self.  It is not a tool to be taken lightly either.  As I said before, a pentagram can be misused, so the pentagram itself is not evil, but the person wielding it can be.  So, by that logic, the pentagram is not a holy item either.  It is all in the perception and uses that come with the pentagram.

I use it for good and see in it the points of the elements and the other things I have mentioned above.  The pentagram is a holy symbol to me, one I wear almost every day whenever I leave the house and one I trace upon my brow the way a Catholic might draw a cross upon their person.  The cross itself is not the holy item, but the ideals behind it are what make it such.  The pentagram is just a tool, one to be used at our discretion.  It is up to us to control this discretion.

To me, the pentagram is a holy item and my opinion is all I can offer on this point.  It is the use of an item, such as the pentagram, that make it pure or tarnished.
