A close relative of the German Spitz, the loyal and intelligent Japanese Spitz is a popular breed of dog in Japan. This small white ball of fluff is approximately half the size of the Samoyed and is believed to share its lineage with the Nordic Spitz and even the Pomeranian. While it has been a favorite in Japan for many years, it has only grown national attention more recent years.
Short History
The history of the Japanese Spitz varies upon who you ask or who is telling the story. One reference says the ancestors of this breed arrived in Japan via trading ships. Another source states these dogs are descendents of the Siberian Samoyed and the creation into this small breed of dog began during the 1800s. According to the Japanese Spitz Club of America, the origination of the Japanese Spitz “is said to be the large-sized white German Spitz brought to Japan around 1920..”. Like many other dog breeds, the true history of the Japanese Spitz will probably never be known.
Characteristics
This breed may have dainty features but the Japanese Spitz has more than what meets the eye. They average only 12 to 14 inches in height and have a maximum weight of about 13 to 15 pounds. The coat is pure white which is dense and somewhat short. The fluffy tail curls up over the top rear of the dog’s body. They have an alert expression that just screams “I have a mission in life” – they are quite enjoyable, lively, and bold.
Care and Health
The Japanese Spitz is generally a healthy breed of dog but because of their small stature, they can become troubled by certain disorders that many other small dog breeds are prone to acquiring. They are an active dog which requires ample exercise. The most attention needed is to the dog’s coat which will need regular grooming. When the coat is shedding, more brushings will be required.
Temperament
Loyal to their owner, the Japanese Spitz is described as being the perfect little watch dog. They are known to be an all-round perfect dog for almost any situation – apartments, homes, and homes with children. They are active and require liberal exercise which helps avoid any potential behavioral issues which may arise. The Japanese Spitz is highly intelligent and trains quickly.
The Japanese Spitz is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) but they are recognized by the ANKC, CKC, FCI, KC(GB), and KUSA. It is said that it’s only a matter of time before this unique breed will become accepted by AKC. Until then, the Japanese Spitz is content being recognized for its extreme intelligence, delightful personality, and as an overall perfect companion pet.
