Reflections: Self reflection

by Indigo Blu

Created on: December 22, 2009

I have heard the term "Self-Reflection" in so many contexts.  I have heard it used to validate a vacation.  I have heard it used as a reason to take up a hobby.  I have heard it used as a motive for meditation.

The truth of the matter is that self-reflection is a very difficult process.  It is not something where one can learn everything about him/herself in a week, two weeks, a month...self-reflection is a job one must do for him/herself to play this game called "Life".  It's a necessity to handle daily life.  It is not an extra-curricular activity that only people with money can afford to do at a yoga class at a mountain retreat.

Self-Reflection is necessary because if one does not know who he/she is, the person does not know how to manage situations, how to handle conflict, or how to enjoy success.  Self-Reflection does not bring you to the end of the rainbow.  There is no Nirvana with this because Self-Reflection is an on-going thing.  It's a journey that never ends.

Self-Reflection is not only knowing and reflecting on emotions and traits about you, but accepting and embracing all parts of you.  The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.  You have to be able to acknowledge ALL of yourself.  My positive points are that I am strong, intelligent, caring, and spiritual.  My negative points are that I am insecure, disorganized, a poor manager of money, and can verbally decapitate someone just with a lash of my tongue (truth be told, my way with words is both a gift and a curse).   On that note, I should share a small secret: This is my first time EVER admitting to parts of my self-portrait.

Like all people, there are other positives and negatives that I possess.  Some traits I believe I have not discovered because, as stated above, learning about yourself and self-reflection is a continuous journey. I will find these traits within myself when the time is right for me. Other traits I believe I know are a part of me.  However, I probably choose not to acknowledge those traits because if I do so, I may feel more obligated to prove something to others and to myself.  Then, there are those traits that I simply have chosen not to acknowledge, accept or embrace.  My reasoning for that may be due to insecurity, fear of responsibility…I can’t call it.  Self-Reflection: The choice is yours.
