What are the causes of spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a disorder where the spinal column becomes very narrow. This can be in just one section of the spine, or more than one. As a result of this, symptoms appear such as pains and cramping sensations in the legs, for one thing. And pain which radiates to the neck and shoulders for another. It makes sense that spinal stenosis can also cause trouble in mobility, and loss of bladder along with bowel control along with it. The more nerves that are affected in spinal stenosis, the more disabling symptoms that go along with it.

The causes of spinal stenosis number a few things. This is one condition which can be congenital from birth. If it is more of the acquired type of spinal stenosis, this is often as a result of a person that has osteoarthritis. As the cartilage of the spine continues the wearing away, bone spurs will occur. This narrows the spinal column down even further.

If you have had tumors on the spine, tumors may metastasize, and cause spinal stenosis. Some types of tumors are very aggressive, and the more they take over, the case of spinal stenosis becomes worsened.

Herniated disks formation can also have a lot of bearing on developing spinal stenosis. A herniated disk occurs when the disks begin to wear down in your spine, losing their proper fluid balance, and this is what makes the disks weaker and causes breakages easily. As this continues to happen in the disks, they can rupture. It is not uncommon for a person with a herniated disk to have a lot of numbness and pain in the extremities along with weakness.

Your back is also filled with ligaments, which over time, can wear down. The ligaments may become inflexible and also stiff as time moves forward. As these nerves continue in their compression, spinal stenosis may set in.

Some people have what is known as Paget's Disease. What happens in the cycle of Paget's Disease is that new bone forms faster than the body needs it to form, causing weakness in your bones that are most likely to have more fractures. It all stands to reason then, that as these new unwanted bones continue their formation, that it has an effect on the compression of the spinal cord.

If you have had an injury due to a bad fall or car accident, this may cause spinal stenosis. Breaking the back can cause an impairment in the spinal column, therefore creating the condition of spinal stenosis.

For any medical problem you feel is related to your back, talk to your doctor for advice and treatment. This article was only meant for informational purposes.
