Successful blogging represents the greatest aspirations of many Internet content producers. Blogging does not require a great deal of Internet technical knowledge, there is no need for a blogger to have outstanding writing ability and it is entirely possible to blog for free. Facts such as these often lead to the assumption that blogging success is all but guaranteed for those with minimal knowledge of the process and that blog popularity and revenue generation are all but guaranteed. As many find to their cost, however, there is more to blogging than meets the eye and success tends to come only for those who are shrewd, dedicated, patient and even to some extent, lucky.
Blogging is firstly about choosing an extremely specific, dedicated subject of wider human interest upon which to blog. If the subject of a blog is too general, the competition levels it will have on the Web are likely to be too great for a realistic chance of success. Equally, if the subject is one which is not likely to prove of interest to others, no one will be likely to wish to read the blog. Choosing a blog subject means picking one about which you are passionate and knowledgeable, as well as one which is likely to be of interest to other people.
The blog hosting platform, URL and title have to be carefully considered. The platform should suit your technical ability and the URL and title should be extremely specific to the nature of the blog. The Google Adwords tool can be extremely helpful in finding key words and phrases which are regularly searched online but which do not have significant levels of competition.
Blog posts in every instance have to be concise and relevant. Although the blog should be dedicated to teaching or informing, value has to be perceived in each post if readers are to be enticed to return. Original, quality photographs are good in blog posts, especially at the start of each post where they are likely to catch the eye of random Web browsers and encourage them to continue reading.
Frequent posting is essential to blogging success. A blog is akin to a newspaper in this respect and readers who follow the blog will want up to date information on a regular basis. Where a blog is allowed to stagnate, without updates two to three times a week, followers are likely to become disillusioned and go elsewhere. Search engine rankings also depend upon blogs being frequently updated, helping new readers to find the blog.
It is important to promote a blog around the Web. This applies to the blog as a whole and to each individual post. Blog catalogs are excellent ways to have blogs categorized and social networking and bookmarking sites can be effectively used to promote individual posts and the blog on an ongoing basis. You may also wish to connect with those who blog on a similar subject through theses sites and perhaps invite others to guest post on your blog. This serves both to give your readers a new perspective on the subject and may well lead to guests helping to promote your blog in their own interest.
It should be realized that blogging is an activity where overnight success is extremely unlikely. In order to build popularity for a blog and earn decent revenue, patience, time and hard work is likely to be required. Where the subject has been chosen well and the posts are of sufficient quality and frequency, blogging success to at least some extent should come with time.
