Humor: Reality

by Joyce Bueter

Created on: December 21, 2009

A Mind can be at once a wondrous and a terrifying thing, if indeed it is a thing.  It could be a place, ponder that if you will.  Take mine for instance, (if you dare) I haven’t figured out which of the above my mind is, I think a little of both depending on the time of day and circumstances.

My mind will sometimes have me believe that I am perpetually in my twenties, thick black hair, piercing green eyes and a flawless complexion with a personality the envy of all who know me.  Remember now, we are talking about my mind versus reality.  I sometime walk through my life thinking things are perfect and all is right around me.  Nothing can go wrong in this world.   My jokes are extremely funny, my words of wisdom work wonders in helping other folks with their sad situations.  I sweep gracefully into a room and instantly everyone feels better; hope for the future is once again evident; all is right with the world.

I’ll bet I am not alone in my forays into the surreal, I imagine everyone has their moments of delusion.  Perhaps not as blatant as what I am describing but enough to keep from going insane with “reality”.   What is so great about reality anyway?  Why not live in a parallel world?  After all, reality can be so boring and most of the time it is so, well, real.

I have no problem retreating from a cruel dark world into one that is beautiful and entertaining.  It is a much more interesting and fun place to be so why not go there when you can.  I am not saying you should “stay” there, just go for a little while to give yourself a rest from the daily grind most of us endure.

At any rate, I am usually brought up short as they say, who “they” are I haven’t found out yet but “they” are always saying something.  I pay no attention anymore,   Getting back to reality; I was shocked back into it one day when I decided to look into my quite large mirror that hangs in the hallway.   I looked into the mirror and asked the age old question;

“Mirror, mirror on the wall who’s the fairest one of all?”   The mirror fogged over and a figure began to emerge. It reminded me somewhat of Sonny Bono.  I thought, “Oh my goodness, it’s going to answer me!  And it did.

The apparition took a good look at me and replied,   “Who’s the fairest one of all?   It aint YOU Babe!”
