Dog breed facts: Cairn Terrier

The Cairn Terrier is one of the cutest, smartest little dogs there is.  They have hazel eyes and a button looking black nose.  They can be a variety of different colors such as gray, cream, a sand color, whisky, different shades of brindle, wheat, red and brackish, but never white.  The majority of the time the tip of their tail, ears and muzzle are a darker color than the rest of their body. Add to that their shaggy eyebrows that hide their eyes completely if they aren't trimmed and their hairy faces, and you have an irresistible mascot.

These dogs can actually talk with their eyes.  Their whimsical looks at times will have you rolling with laughter.  Their eyes are so alive and alert that they are able to convey their thoughts and desires quite easily.  They are capable of showing a myriad of different expressions.

In spite of their friendly and lovable nature, they are known to have a very strong will.  They don't respond well to owners who don't keep the upper hand.  Once they know who is boss, the owner will have a loyal mascot that will stand beside him no matter what happens.  However, if he ever learns he doesn't have to obey, he will become ill tempered and disobedient.  To show their discontent, they may begin to bark a lot for no apparent reason.

These little dogs are great companions for children.  They love to run and romp and are quite attentive playmates.  They are active and need plenty of exercise.  They don't like to be cooped up in a small place.  They are very smart and are quick to learn tricks.

Like any other long haired dog, the Cairn Terrier needs to have its hair brushed three or four times a week so it won't become tangled and matted.  It helps to bathe them two or three times a month with a shampoo that has a conditioner in it.  This makes the hair soft, and it doesn't tangle nearly as much.  It also makes it easier to get any tangles out.

These dogs were originally used to hunt, and they love to track wild animals.  People, who live in the country, like to have them around because they are great for catching rats.  They, also, make excellent watch dogs.

If you have never had the opportunity to be around a Cairn Terrier, you don't know what you are missing.  They are enjoyable, fun-loving little dogs with a great big heart.
