Would you allow your child to marry someone of another race?
The idea of our children getting married is in itself a major concern for most of the worlds' parents. Every parent worries that their children will fall in love with someone who will love, respect, and live contentedly together. Their concern also includes the race of their new daughter-in-law/son-in-law.
Race has certainly been a major concern in our society for several generations. All people have a small amount of prejudice and bigotry in them. It seems to be a natural part of being human. People will socialize with persons of a different race, but when asked how they would feel about their child marrying someone of a different race, the answer is usually the same.
People of another race make good friends, but marriage to your child, that raises another issue. Why are friends of another race acceptable, but not marriage? This seems to be a question that every parent will face when their children become of age.
A few generations ago, this would have been a catastrophe. The concern for inter-racial marriages was of a legitimate concern. A women would have been tarred and feathered in a southern state. The acceptance of society made it difficult for many couples to openly walk the streets together. Children from these families were shunned and called names. Other children could be cruel. It was difficult for a child of inter-racial marriages in society. These children usually must choose to live as the minority race. Our own president is a prime example of this. He is just as much one color as he is the other. But he lives as he is of one race, the minority.
Most people do not have a problem with marriages of mixed nationalities, people that come from another country. The concern usually becomes an issue when the marriage is between African-American and another race.
Most of those concerns are caused because people are ignorant of the customs, and misunderstand the differences in other races. It is these misunderstandings and ignorance that causes prejudice and bigotry to continue. In reality, there is no difference in races. Customs may vary, simply because of religious beliefs and areas where a person has lived. Life's needs and mentality are the same among all people.
Where does love fit into a scenario where there are so many misunderstandings. Love itself is blind. Cupid doesn't seem to notice the difference between races or color. There is no color barrier when cupid shoots its arrow.
