How to maintain a blog

by Ruth Belena

It is not difficult to maintain a blog when you are enthusiastic about what you do and what you blog about. When you gain a good following for your blog you increase its potential for earning money from ads and affiliate programs. The best way to maintain a blog is by increasing its value.

• Do not become discouraged if your blog is not getting many visitors.

It takes time for each blog post to be indexed by search engines so people can find your posts. Make sure each post has a good title, and repeat keywords from the title within the post itself. Remember also to add appropriate tags to each post you publish on your blog. Effective keywords add to search engine optimization of your blog.

By posting regularly on your blog you should get more repeat visitors and a steady flow of traffic from search engines.

• Post genuine content on your blog.

Maintain a blog with original content. When your blog has a number of posts, you can begin to register with blog directories. You should join blogging networks or communities where you blog will be listed. Some blog sites will update your listing with each new post you add to your own blog.

Do not just use blog posts only to promote products or endorse money making programs. Your blog can feature genuine product reviews and informative articles connected with programs you want to promote online, or with the type of ads you wish to feature on your blog. Blog visitors are more likely to click banners and text links when these appear in or near articles and reviews they have found from an online search or a directory. When visitors find good content, they are more interested in ads and banners associated with that content.

Blog posts can feature images, video or audio content. You can add any kind of content provided you have permission to use it or you own the copyright. Write good titles, descriptions and tags to attract visitors who use similar wording in their searches. You should also benefit with extra traffic from updates at social sites, link sharing sites and directories where your blog is listed.

• Continue to network and be interactive on your blog.

When you participate at social sites or in blogging communities, you should build up your own following by reading what other people post, commenting, sharing links and adding friends or followers. Then you will benefit each time you update your page with a new blog post, or when you add links to some of your best blog posts.

Interactive content will keep your blog interesting. You will get more comments on your blog when you write posts that invite opinions or suggestions. This should help your blog to grow in popularity. Responding to comments will get you more regular readers. You should visit blogs belonging to people who leave comments, and add your comments on their blog posts. That will also help to bring more traffic to your own blog.

Accept that not everyone will agree with what you post on your blog. Being controversial can generate good feedback, provided you monitor comments before accepting them, and disallow any abusive, offensive or nasty ones.

The most important point to remember when you want to maintain a blog is that blogging is not a solo activity. When you blog you are part of a great online community. Aim to make an impact with your participation and gain a good reputation for posting quality content on your blog.
