Poetry: Voices

by Gerry Legister

Created on: December 19, 2009   Last Updated: January 12, 2011

I hear strange voices in the night,
Come spellbound stronger than fear,
Reconcile my sacrifice to the morning light,
And join memories of soldiers in despair.

Trained to protect the people we once trust,
Duty became the instrument of hate,
The nation watches opportunity crumble and lost,
Recovery was already too late.

Our hero's voices lay where buildings tumble and fall,
Cannon powder leaving holes in the ground,
Memories left behind watch and wait for us all,
To rebuild with bravest legacy found.

Missing places mark the lost of many lives,
The courage they pledge was a sparkling torch,
Shining a light in the darken labyrinth of our lives,
Where prayers with their voices are almost crush.

I still hear voices in the night breaking the silence,
Passing through imagery of my mind,
Lost from sight, going further into the distance,
And disappearing into the memory of time.
