Poetry: Being invisible

by Lenee Daniels

Created on: December 18, 2009

Open your eyes and see what is real

Stop changing the truth to control what you feel

If you care to look closely, you may see my tears

But I’m guarding them tightly... in case mother hears

She says I’m a liar, a no good, a cheat

Shoves me around til I fall on my seat

Her life is a burden because I am there

I drive her to cope through affair after affair

Sad eyes peer out from my bedroom mirror

Craving to hear I grow dearer and dearer

At least don’t act like everything is okay

Just someone to love me each night I do pray

Yes I’m talking to you, my teacher, my friend,

My neighbor, my preacher, all of you just pretend

Don’t get involved; don’t see the girl’s pain

Tip toe around where her heart tore in vain

Conflict you hate, it is easier to say

Her mother is nice, the bruise is from play

Do you expect me to tell you the truth

I love my mother...I’ll never give proof

But please don’t ignore what is happening here

Help us somehow so I can live without fear

I’ll know I was worth your effort and try

That knowledge may free me to live and not die
