If you are reading this chances are that you are interested in a few little tips to keep litter box odor down in your home. The fact is that nothing will stink up your house quicker and nastier than your cat litter box. So here are a few little tips to keeping the odor down in your home.
1). Make sure that your kitty litter box stays clean. It is best that your kitty litter is scooped out regularly. It should be at least every other day. IF you go more than two days between scooping it allows for the littler box to fester and stink.
2). Scrub it out at least every month. Even though you scoop it out every day. Your cat litter box should be completely emptied and scrubbed out with disinfectant and the hottest water you can stand. This should also be done at least once a month. If you have multiple cats it is wise to consider doing it every two weeks or so.
3). Baking soda is your best friend. Okay so you know that baking soda is good for taking smells and stains out of clothes and you may even use the refrigerator boxes. However, baking soda is your best friend when it comes to your litter box. It is excellent for removing odors and keeping them at bay. Just sprinkle in a little every time you scoop out the littler box and when you refill it after a good scrubbing.
4). Choose a scented cat litter. I personally use arm & hammer (yes I know baking soda fanatic) but fresh step and tidy cats are good too. Also, it would be wise to stay away from heavy clay based cat litter as it does have a tendency to stink more and does not hold odors very well.
5). Size of the litter box. Don't think that it matters? Well guess again, small litter boxes have a tendency to stink more as they do not allow for as much air flow. Its always better to at least stink with a medium sized one because it has more room for kitty (or kitties) and allows more air to travel though it.
6). Keep the litter box in a well ventilated area that is away from your main living areas. If the room is ventilated the smell has somewhere else to go besides your living room.
In summary, just by keeping the litter clean and fresh you will greatly reduce smells and odors. Remember that baking soda and a good cat litter are also important to keeping it under control. Keep it in a well ventilated area that is away fro your main living spaces. Hope these tricks work for you. Good luck!
