I am an avid fan of the music genre known as Hip Hop (Please, don't mistake this for Rap). Hip Hop is to me, what a bible can be to a Reverend. It is artistic, poetic, and it is actual music. Needless to say Hip Hop is a dying brand. People have traded instruments for electronic sound, turntables for computer programs, and artistic-poetic talent for popularity and gimmick.
Lets talk about the content for a minute shall we?
Rap music is about poor upbringings, bad living situations, and glorifies being a criminal because of this.
Hip Hop Music is also about poor upbringings, but using musical talent and strategy to avoid being a criminal.
Of course kids all over suburbia are going to find the former much more intriquing seeing as they actually believe everything out of these artists mouth! (Naive suburbia is another article coming soon!) Actually, lets scratch suburbia althogether, kids in general are going to latch on because, well, it includes violence, profanity, and slang! Face it, that is much more fun than a positive influence!
That means Hip Hop today is at a low. It remains mostly underground, so those who enjoy it, have to look for it. While this keeps the art about the art and not the money, it also lets cheap spin-off's pollute the airwaves and influence people in a negative way.
