This is a good first step, you must have an interest or you wouldn't have clicked on the article.
First you must decide what values do you want to support with your volunteer work? Do you want to eradicate the world of homelessness or ignorance? Do you want to preach the Gospel? Consider what you want to accomplish.
Next look at what sort of skills you have, you might not have even considered that you could volunteer somewhere that you could get to use skills that few others have. You might have computer skills that you didn't realize that anyone needed.
Thirdly you just have to start to make calls to charities that you think you can help. Talk to your friends, you might even end up with a charity that you alone started.
Fourthly, step back and be proud at what you have done, you have made a difference, and its OK to feel good about helping others.
