It might be well to begin with an idea of what exactly ketosis is. A simple explanation is that it is the process by which the body converts fats to energy, which in turn produces ketones. Too many ketones in the blood will lead to ketosis, caused by the consumption of too many proteins in the diet and not enough carbohydrates. Over recent years, many diets have been based on just that. But it can truly be said that an unbalanced diet of this kind will cause ketosis. For those suffering from diabetes, this is potentially dangerous, as the over-production of ketones can lead to ketoacidosis, putting a burden on the liver and kidney functions.
The signs and symptoms of ketosis are not pleasant. They are said to last for several days, usually a week at least, when following a high protein, low carbohydrate diet regime. Some opinions expressed on the issue suggest that eventually, ketones will balance out. Here are some of the signs to watch for when using such a diet.
* Breath smells sweet, fruity and almost as if alcohol had recently been consumed.
* Metallic, unpleasant taste present in the mouth.
* Feeling thirsty all the time.
* Undue tiredness and fatigue.
* General feeling of weakness.
* Dizziness, often accompanied by nausea.
* Stomach ache.
* Headache.
* Sleeplessness or sleep disturbance.
In order to counteract these symptoms, advice given includes drinking plenty of water to flush out the ketones, exercise to help disperse them, though how anyone suffering from weakness, tiredness and dizziness is supposed to exercise, is anyone's guess. Eating plenty of small, healthy snacks and taking vitamins is also meant to help with the signs of ketosis.
Many people will swear to the successful weight loss they achieve using a low carbohydrate, high protein diet. The weight comes off fast, so they are prepared to tolerate the discomfort and potential problems with ketosis. Fast weight loss is not the best way, and of course when the person reverts to normal eating patterns, the weight is likely to return. Health practitioners would be happier if those seeking to lose weight would follow a healthy, balanced diet using the main food groups in the correct proportions. Carbohydrates are necessary for producing glucose and so, energy, and to attain balance; proteins too are important. But to almost totally eliminate the former can result in the signs of ketosis.
A weight loss program is meant to make the person feel healthier and more energized through eating better and exercising more. A diet that makes someone suffer any or all of the symptoms outlined above not does create that positive, healthy lifestyle. A good eating plan like WeightWatchers is far more beneficial, will last for life and most certainly will not bring on those awful signs of ketosis. Slow and steady loss is best and will leave the dieter feeling healthier and fitter for longer.
