A Mysterious, yet Beneficial Death
Jesus’ death was one of the most mysterious, yet beneficial deaths in mankind’s history. Why Mysterious? And why Beneficial?
A Mysterious Death
The mystery that surrounds Jesus’ death is strongly related to this profound, yet most inspiring scripture: “Take courage! I have conquered the world!” (John 16:33) Why would a man choose to do such a great thing? Why would a man choose to die? Why did this man consider that his death was a victory over the world? From a human point of view, these questions have no answer; they are full of mystery and are beyond our powers of understanding. But there is an intelligible answer and it is related with the foundation of the world.
The biblical account of creation presents some events that drove the world to the road of rebellion against God and his morals. The main personage in this drama is an angel who wanted something he had not the right to have, something that was God’s possession: the worship. In other words, his own cultivated pride driven this angel to desire, even to lust, for something he couldn’t have. How was though possible for a perfect being to backslide in such a hurtful way? Let’s take a look to other scriptures. For example James chapter 1, verses 14 and 15, say: “Each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire. Then the desire, when it has become fertile, gives birth to sin; in turn, sin, when it has been accomplished, brings forth death.” Intriguing words indeed! They explain very well the point of issue. Being perfect means having free will. Free will though, when not properly used, means wrong desires, sin and ultimately death. That was the process that took over that angel’s mind and judgment. He became a rebel, and was named Satan the Devil. (Ezekiel 28:13-15, 17) Afterwards, he then tempted the first man and first woman with his own desires. And the process repeated. (Genesis 3:1-5)
A world was created this way: our world, the world in which we live in. And yes that beginning of the world was in fact a bad foundation for mankind. What was this foundation? The lie. The lie that humans would do much better without God. And everything started. History confirmed however that the Satan’s supposition was not true at all. The man who reasserted that was Jesus. He was a man of faith, and demonstrated once for all that the world we live in is depicted so well by this Bible verse:
