Lennie and George’s relationship is a very unique situation. Most people either have a love or a hate relationship. Lennie and George have a quite different relationship. Lennie would never get mad at George, and will trust him to the end. George gets mad at Lennie because he is so dumb, but then he needs Lennie as a member of there, sort of, “family.” Lennie and George’s relationship is quite different from any normal relationship that is common among most people.
Lennie is a person that is not the smartest person out there, but is a very strong and hardworking person. Lennie has a relationship with George, because they grew up together. When they grew up, George would always make fun of Lennie, and play jokes on him. Lennie would not even notice and when George would help him he would forget and love George even more. Lennie will defend George at any, and all costs. If anyone talks bad about George, then Lennie is right there to defend and even, if the time was right, kill to protect George.
We see this when Lennie is talking to Crooks. When Crooks even suggests that George won’t come back, Lennie freaks out and goes after Crooks. Luckily, Crooks realizes it before any harm is does and calms Lennie down. Overall, Lennie loves George and wouldn’t do anything to hurt him.
George’s relationship to Lennie is a little bit different from Lennie’s to George. George loves and hates Lennie, depending on the situation. We see in the book, that George gets mad at Lennie for doing bad thing. When they get chased out of Weed, George yells at Lennie for petting a dead mouse. George said, “Well, you ain’t petting no mice while you walk with me.”(Steinbeck, 6) Then, he yells at him for forgetting things all of the time.
George also loves Lennie. When Lennie says that he will go and live in a cave by himself, the softer part of George comes out and he tries to comfort him and say that it will be ok. Also, when they are on the farm and he would almost get into trouble, George would say it is ok. When Curley fights Lennie and Lennie crushes Curley’s hand, George says that he had it coming to him. George and Lennie’s relationship is a very different relationship from a lot of other peoples.
