Some men think an expensive, and showy Saint Valentines day gift, is the way to a lady’s heart. It is not necessarily so. Thought and care are the way to keep a lady happy on Saint Valentine’s Day and every day.

A home made card or love letter are far better than any card bought from a shop. A card or love letter that tells her how you feel, not one printed with a hackneyed worn out sentiment. She will keep a homemade card, or a love letter, and read it over and over again.

One red rose says much more than a huge bunch of red roses, however much they cost. You do not have to buy roses just because it is Valentines Day, buy a bunch of her favourite flowers. Lingerie is a present for you not for her.

 If the lady is your life’s partner, do not buy her any sort of household appliance. The whole point about St Valentine’s Day is romance. A vacuum cleaner or an iron are not romantic gifts.

Something frivolous is the perfect gift, e.g. MH bought M one year a fluffy pink pig because he knew that M was very fond of pigs. Think about what she likes, if she collects little china cottages, even if you think they are awful, buy her one; she will appreciate the thought.

A meal out is always something special. A meal that she does not have to cook and the knowledge that she does not have to wash the dishes, and can spend special time with you, will make it a special evening for her.

There is something very special about a man cooking for his lady. Cook something elegantly simple that you have cooked many times before; Do not attempt to cook something elaborate that you have never tried before.

A walk along the sea front eating chips (French fries) out of newspaper can be a very romantic way to spend Saint Valentine’s Day, and just as romantic as an expensive weekend in Paris

The most important gift a gentleman can give his lady on Saint Valentine’s Day is love, thought and time. If the lady is your wife, make her feel like your girlfriend again. Talk about yourselves, and your love for one another, your plans for your joint future, memories that only you two share and whisper sweet nothings. All the things you did when you were courting; it is not the time to discuss the telephone bill or anything at all to do with domesticity or the children. It is a day for you two to be a couple again.
