Poetry: Sin

The minister explained to us

How sin began, from Genesis:

“An apple hanging from a tree

Adulterated you and me.”

An apple? Could one really bring

About such human suffering?

Did what turned humans into brutes

Result from Adam munching fruits?

A produce compote: who would guess

It made them know their nakedness?

And being naked, why’d they hide,

Lord Adam and his princess bride?

Why was the God of you and me

Denied Creator’s rights to see

The forms He sculpted with His hand?

That’s something I don’t understand.

What clues are hidden in this ode?

Can we unravel heaven’s code

Of nakedness and fruits and snakes

And gardens lush, and what it takes

To find ourselves consigned to burn,

Cast out, with no hope of return?

Is there some meaning to this myth

Of how we squandered heaven’s gift?

How did a fruit, that’s meant for food,

Poison for all time human blood?

And why would God, Who loves us all

Set mankind up to take a fall?
