The Broken Piano
From a place beyond understanding
a Piano beckons
and a child begins to play.
They become as one
The child’s extraordinary gift
inhibits his connection
to the veracity of life
As he grows
agitation overwhelms him
The world is not his friend.
His only fulfillment,
only sense of joy
comes from the Piano.
Like a vapor, time passes …
Years of dust resides inside the worn out Piano
It no longer recognizes the man’s touch
and refuses to sound when felt-covered hammers strike its strings
Yet twisted arthritic hands continue to chord the chipped ivory keys.
The old man is now deaf
Cobwebs reside inside his head
Finally …
With a broken spirit
The gifted man gives up all sense of emotion
and succumbs to the silence.

Poetry: Aging
Years slowly settle on us, like the dust
In layers first invisible, then white
Borne by the unsuspecting air, it must

Aging doesn't bring just wrinkles and gray hair
But wisdom and experience - a powerful pair
When I look in the mirror as
The room is still
The light shines through the blinds
We wake, the sun glows, the birds sing
The cat stirs
it winds its tail
You ask, "How are you?" Before I answer, let me say:
I have always had a vegetable garden - for over fifty years
I have watched
by Roy Blokker
What do you know of aging?
Your first gray hairs peek out
like frightened ducks near the blind,
your bones protest a bit too
