England have had a few great players. Most notably from the '66 generation but there are of course a good few more since. Here are a few of the great England players.
Moore:
Moore was England's captain, and the only to have lifted the World Cup and played 108 games for England. Moore also played in the 1970 World Cup, where he played his last World Cup games. Overall, Moore was a great defender for both club and country.
Geoff Hurst:
One of Moore's England team mates proved a star of the '66 final. Hurst scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, which a record number of goals in a final. In addition to this, Hurst also scored further goals for England as against Argentina and Romania in the 1970 World Cup. A great striker, Hurst scored key goals for England.
Bobby Charlton:
Who holds the England scoring record? Charlton does, with 49 goals scored for England. Overall, a fine midfield player who outscored a number of great England strikers playing for England.
Jimmy Greaves:
Greaves was one of England's best strikers. For England, he played 52 games and scored 44 goals overall which is five short of the record of 49. Had Greaves played a few more games for England, then he could have eclipsed the current record.
Peter Shilton:
Shilton has played the most games for England with over 100 games. An overall 125 games were played for England, with a debut in the '72 European Championship. One of England's great goal-keepers, Shilton played in the 1990 World Cup, and the semi-final against Germany in addition with other World Cups.
Kevin Keegan:
Keegan did not play in the best England teams, but few will doubt he is one of the great players. Keegan played 62 games for England and scored 62 goals. Overall, Keegan was also twice European player of the year and was certainly formidable for Liverpool.
Beckham:
One of the best players of more recent times, Beckham has played over 100 games for England. A fine midfield player, with super crossing and set-piece play.
Overall, those are a few of the great England players. Players that have set records for England such as Charlton and Shilton, in addition with other great players such as Moore who have captained the team.
