Guide to Chinese New Year events in the US
Chinese New Year is a colorful event and is celebrated by the many Chinese populations around the world. February 14th 2010 will usher in the Year of the Tiger and many events will be arranged to celebrate this. America has a large population of Chinese residents in many of the cities and there will be events all over the country which will bring in the New Year in an exciting and fun way. Some of the best events that are being planned for the Year of the Tiger celebrations include the following.
Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco
This event has been named as one of the top ten parades in the world and is a celebration which has been held every year in the city since the time of the gold rush. This means it has been a feature of San Francisco life for nearly 150 years and it is one of the few night illuminated parades in America. The parade is arranged by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and this year is being held on February 27. The parade route starts on Market and then goes up Geary before doubling back and coming down Post. The route ends on Kearny at Columbus. It features many floats with performers in elaborate clothing, the 201 man Golden Dragon, lots of exploding firecrackers and the event is one of the most colorful in the San Francisco calendar. The newly crowned Miss China USA also features in the parade and it is one of the largest celebrations of Chinese culture outside Asia with hundreds of thousands of spectators enjoying the view. If you are in San Francisco at the time it is definitely worth a trip to see the parade.
Los Angeles Golden Dragon Parade
The 2010 Golden Dragon Parade to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Tiger will be the 111th in the history of the event. Over 100,000 people will line the streets of Los Angeles to view this colorful event and over the last 25 years it has grown to include many floats, marching bands, performers and cultural groups. This year's event will be staged on Saturday 20 February. The Chinatown area of the city also hosts the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February and this will have many stalls with Chinese wares and food for sale and also displays of Chinese culture and entertainment.
Chinatown in New York has many events and celebrations to bring in the Chinese New Year. On the 14 February there will be a spectacular firecracker ceremony between 11.00 and 15.00 in Columbus Park in the city. The ceremony
