Short stories: A glimpse into the future

Nina opened her eyes as soon as the sunlight peeked into her room. Her body ached as she realized she had a bad night. She turned to the right to get her glasses, stretched her arms and feet and placed the glasses on her nose, blinking a few times before she opened her eyes again.

Her closet was full of new clothes, she never kept anything more than six months, so most of the time she was looking for something new to wear and more often than not she would forget about the new sweater or skirt she bought on sale.

After taking a shower she covered her body in lotion and like every morning, she walked toward the kitchen to pour herself a bowl of cereal and had breakfast while the lotion dried. The small fifties style kitchen table that Nina had gotten at a flea market was always covered in fashion magazines so that she would always had something to read while she was eating.

When she was a teenager she realized that fashion trends return every ten years, so she decided never to throw away her favorites magazines since she figured the trend would come back and she would be able go to those old magazines for advice, so her table and house were filled with them.

Her blouse had gotten wrinkled from the clothes being so tight in the closet so she took out her steamer in order to make her outfit as presentable as possible for the meeting she had at work.

Nina’s dream was always to work as a video creator with animation, but while a good position came her way she decided to take a job as an account executive at a big airline. She had been working there for more time that she had plan, but she new that she always had time to go back, so for now, she was content with getting a paycheck to buy what she wanted and maybe save some for a rainy day.

She looked at the clock, finished dressing herself, grabbed her bag and ran towards the door to go to work. Her days were always the same, she would take a long time to wake up and eat breakfast and then dressed herself in a hurry and put on her make up as soon as she got to her office, the first thirty minutes of work were used to finish her morning routine of mascara and coffee.

When she got to her car the world she new changed, she looked at herself in the rearview mirror, she notice for the first time that the glimpse of the future she had seen when she took the job but convinced herself it would never come true, had in fact, come for her.

Ten years had passed since she took that temp job, the break she was waiting for had never come, and in her day by day routine, she had forgotten to create her own future and a decision that she had made in a split second had become her life, a life she never wanted, with nothing to show for but the wrinkles in her blouse and in her face.
