Ideas for singles on Valentine's Day

It is one of the most highly anticipated holidays of the year. For some, it brings excitement and hope, but for others, it is the embodiment of fear and disappointment. Better known as Valentine's Day, this holiday is not always the apex of happiness and joy. For those who remain single, it serves as a constant reminder of their current relationship status, or lack there of.

Although Valentine's Day may be considered a couples holiday, it doesn’t have to be spent mourning the fact that you feel like the only single soul on the planet; that being said, there are numerous ways for singles to spend Valentines Day.

Before we go over these options, lets first remind ourselves that staying home and crying over a break up or the fact that there is “no one out there for me” is not an option at all. Staying at home alone is only an option for one who truly enjoys their time to themselves, who will genuinely find it relaxing to cook dinner, watch a movie, maybe do some laundry, and simply get on with their life while they have a break.

Another option is to go out with friends. Go to a good restaurant, bar, or even a movie. Girls or guys night out can be just as fun on this occasion as it is on any other day of the year, and the plus is that you just might run into that special someone who followed the same approach that you did.

Many singles also choose to stay in with friends, whether it be a girls' movie night, maybe a poker night for the guys, or just a cook out or dinner with friends. Enjoying the company of friends can often be far more enjoyable than one might convince themselves, and it is most definitely more enjoyable than an awkward last minute dinner date with someone who is merely filling a position for that evening.

Despite society and the medias emphasis on having that special someone to spend Valentine's Day with, it can be surprisingly more fun to just relax and treat this time as a break from the rest of the world and time to be with people who are important in your life. Although there are many people who happily go on fancy dinner dates and enjoy their time with their significant other, it can be disastrous to try and force that date upon yourself or make yourself feel that just anyone would fill the Valentine's Day void. This idea is simply unrealistic and untrue, it will only cause stress and disappointment; however, focusing on spending time with friends and family can be the most rewarding and fulfilling way to spend your time on this holiday.
