Black and Tan Coonhounds are an energetic and intelligent breed of dog. Caring for a Black and Tan Coonhound puppy isn’t difficult but they do require a dedicated owner. Knowing a bit about the Black and Tan’s history and characteristics will help potential owners understand a bit about their care for acquiring one of these magnificent dogs.
Short History of the Black and Tan Coonhound
Along with other breeds of hounds like the Redbone, the Black and Tan was purposely created for hunting especially small game like raccoons. Their purpose is not to catch the game but to tree the prey and hold it there until the hunter arrives. Black and Tans have a close resemblance to Bloodhounds with their pendulous ears but they lack a lot of the droopy skin. Because of its breeding, the Black and Tan is a working dog that enjoys hunting, tracking, and being a watchful commander of its family.
Diet
Like all dog breeds, a Black and Tan Coonhound will thrive when given a high-quality dog food. Purchasing pups from a reputable breeder is always recommended. A reputable breeder is a knowledgeable breeder who will be able to answer any question you might have before taking ownership. A reputable breeder will also provide new owners with a care sheet which will include the current food in which the pup has been fed.
Although new owners do not have to stick to this food, it is best to wean a pup or older dog off of their current diet rather than making a hasty switch. Black and Tans do tend to become overweight so feeding proper amounts is crucial for maintaining the dog’s weight.
Exercise and Training
Exercise is an important key in keeping the Black and Tan emotionally and physically happy. Like most puppies, Black and Tan pups love to play and chew - it is important to provide your pup with appropriate toys for stimulation and avoid destruction of your property. These dogs are not recommended for apartment living but rather with an energetic family that can provide its need for the outdoors. Training of Black and Tan pups should begin at a young age. They are highly intelligent and obedient dogs which make them highly appreciated by outdoorsmen. If not used for hunting, a Black and Tan will need daily exercise to prevent behavioral issues which may arise.
