As a woman driving alone you are mostly likely to get to your destination safely, however you should always be cautious and ready for any kind elements that could come your way. Whether you are being followed, have a breakdown or are lost you need be aware and prepared. The first way to make sure you get to where you are going safely is to be prepared. Always, make sure you have your destination mapped out. You may want to have a map with you. You want to have your cell phone fully charged, as well as plenty of gas in your vehicle. If you need to fill up your car, you will want to do in a place that is well lit and as early in the day as possible. Keep your insurance card handy. All cars need to have an emergency kit handy. You never know when your car may break down or how long it will be before help arrives and in states where winter is harsh prolonged and unexpected exposure to the elements could lead to hypothermia, frostbite and potential death. A good winter kit will have such items as: flashlights with batteries, a blanket, matches and candle stubs. Energy bars and water will also be helpful. A bright orange or red handkerchief or flag will come in handy so that others may be aware of your car and need for help.
Another situation that maybe scary for a woman is when they are being followed. If you think you are being followed, your first inclination may be to speed up. However by increasing speed you may be increasing your likely hood of losing control and crashing. Remain calm and keep your speed down. Do not go home if someone is tailing you. Often times if you go to a service station, they will call the police for you or if you can drive to the nearest police or fire station. The biggest way to scare off an aggressive driver is to attract attention. Honk your horn continuously, flash your lights but also keep windows rolled up and locked. If the driver forces you to stop, do not open your windows, doors or get out of your car. Remain calm and park with your wheels facing the road as quickly as possible. Finally be alert. Notice your location, when the aggressor started following you and for how long. If you can try to remember the make, model, and color of the car; as well as the sex of the driver and a license plate number. Do not be afraid to report the incident to the police. Road rage is serious and will be taken seriously. If you are aware of your surroundings, and are aware of the possibilities you can get to where you want to go safely.
