Excel projects: golf spreadsheets

Excel spreadsheets can be of a variety.  For an Excel project why not consider a golf spreadsheet?  Golf spreadsheets can be suitable for recording golf scores for yourself or a golf championship of some description.  To set up a golf score spreadsheet, consider some of the following guidelines.

Firstly, consider the overall layout of a golf spreadsheet.  You will require a column for the course name on the left side.  This will note what course was played on in each row.  Then you can use 18 smaller columns to note a score for each hole played.  They should be resized appropriately.  Another column to note the course par can be included, and a final column to sum the overall score total for a round played.

For the score total column, you will need to include a sum.  Select the first cell of the column, and then the equal sign next to the function bar.  Then sum can be selected and the range of hole score cells from 1-18.  When done, enter some random numbers into these cells to check that they are all added.  If so you can copy the sum from the first cell to others by selecting the cell and dragging to those below.

With this, you will have a spreadsheet that will add scores for 18 or fewer holes played and return a total score.  However, a more complete spreadsheet will include formatting.  Start by selecting the column heading cells and right-clicking to format.  From here you can select various formatting including borders.  Use a bold border around these column heading cells.  In addition, you should also consider enlarging fonts to 12 or 14, with bold font.

A spreadsheet heading is also good to include.  At the top left of the spreadsheet, consider including a title in cell such as ‘Golf Score Spreadsheet.’  This can be formatted with larger, and perhaps an alternative font.

Some color for spreadsheet cell can also be good to include.  Consider selecting the cells to include the golf hole scores and then light-green shading.

With a complete spreadsheet, you can then record your golf scores.  Starting with the course name, scores for the holes and the par for the course.  Then the hole scores will be added in the total score column to give an overall score total.  With a number of scores recorded, overall scoring averages can then be considered.  The project ends here, but the spreadsheet can always be further edited with graphs etc.
