Poetry: Too far down

by Alishia Fox

Created on: December 15, 2009

The darkness that would seek to destroy me,

(for I had, once, fallen too far down)

Is now all but left behind me.

My eyes readjusted, accustomed yet again to light.

Sometimes still, though I will it not,

As I close my eyes at Night

Intent on entering my place of peace and dreams,

The darkness creeps back in,

Reminding me, he, who seeks to haunt me.

Lingers, unvanquished still.

A piercing scream, I will to escape my lips,

But hear it only in my mind,

I thrash, futilely, undelivered blow's,

My vision is blind.

I should fight, and scratch and bite, refusing to give in,

But by the malice of this unrelenting Demon

I'm paralysed by my own fear.

Today, however, I will not awake drenched in fright,

In sweats and in tears,

Today I will best the demon,

For the first time in a long time, I shall awake with a prayer:

" Lord give me the courage, to accept the things I cannot change, and the strength to change the things I can."

I shall readopt humility, and be not soured by my past,

I shall use it as a lesson learned, as a tool for guidance,

Lord let the lesson last.
